Chrissy van Meersbergen

Sustainability Consultant & Auditor
Owner Green Label Service

Our goal is to help companies become more sustainable. I believe a personal approach, honest advice and customized work is important!

I graduated the International Tourism Management & Consultancy studies Cum Laude and I gained experience in Australia at a large consultancy organisation for tourism destinations and sustainability. This was my first introduction to sustainability certification and consultancy (Green Globe) and I saw this as the ideal way for me to combine work with my interests. Back in the Netherlands, I developed a sustainability scan for organizations and started working for Duurzame Hotels Nederland BV for almost 7 years, as consultant and auditor for several labels.

Starting my own company Green Label Service was the next step. Within my work, I share my knowledge about sustainability and I enjoy it when I see that there are positive developments with every new visit. Especially when people come to me and say; ‘Nowadays, I eat more local food, less meat and I have adjusted my faucets to use less water’, I am happy that my work makes a difference.

Sometimes I get told that people just don’t care, or that the efforts of just one person don’t matter. But if everyone does that little bit extra, I think it makes the difference that we need. I noticed myself that it’s fun and often easy to make more conscious choices. It’s good to see that more and more people in my personal and work environment agree with that. Every step counts and I am glad that I, as a sustainability consultant and auditor, can play my part!

One of my favorite quotes is from Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” I’m looking forward to joining you on your sustainability journey.

In 2011, after completing an MSc in Responsible Tourism Management at the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) in Leeds, I decided to start with respons tourism and market access consultancy.

I am a qualified Green Globe and Travelife for Tour Operator Auditor and my experience of working for Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) in Africa provided me with extensive knowledge about sustainable tourism and certification programs including the chain demands related to sustainability coming from travel trade partners globally. I could not have asked for better practical experience of responsible tourism and it is a privilege to support many award-winning FTT-certified businesses who not only prove that being a sustainable tourism business makes good business sense but are also passionate employers and committed to the people and places they impact upon.

Improving market access and leveraging your sustainability credentials is crucial for tourism businesses, especially small ones. Over the years I have been involved in several European market access programs. They all focus on sustainability improvements alongside regular business development and matchmaking support. Travel trade partners are increasingly selecting tourism products based on sustainability certification as proof of operating responsibly.

Certification is not the answer to all the tourism challenges we face but it is a great tool you can use to improve your business, keep your staff (and guests) happy, save some money and communicate to the outside world and partners. It will keep your on your toes too which is always a good thing!

I graduated from the Master in Global Business & Sustainability and also completed Science of Tourism at Wageningen University & Research. People describe me as social, result-oriented and motivated. I strive for the best possible results and within my role as sustainability consultant I do the same for my clients, in helping them in the Green Key or Green Globe process.
